About Us

Delaware County Habitat for Humanity (DCHFH) became an affiliate in 1989 because Chaplain Jon Powers of Ohio Wesleyan University wanted to create a collegiate chapter. Habitat for Humanity International requires that there be a local affiliate in cities where college chapters operate. Therefore, through his efforts community members established the Delaware County Affiliate so OWU could have a chapter. Our partnership has prospered over the years and two OWU students serve on the Delaware County Habitat for Humanity Board.

The OWU Chapter launched a fund raising campaign in 2006 to fully fund their second DCHFH home.

We have built 28 homes in Delaware since 1989. We currently have two homes under construction one at 3747 North Old State Road in Kilbourne (due to be completed in February) and one at 31 Curtis Street in Delaware. The affiliate plans to break ground on two additional homes in 2007.

In 2001, DCHFH was the first affiliate in the state of Ohio to build a home in partnership with the local developmental disabilities board. At its dedication, Ken Ritchey, Director of the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities announced that he hoped to take our plan and duplicate our efforts statewide. A goal that other affiliates have since undertaken.

Our current board of 17 members and hundreds of volunteers are seeking to increase home construction in response to the needs of the community These needs are great and we enjoy bringing people together who don’t normally get together for a common cause—the elimination of substandard housing in Delaware County

OWU Community Service Learning
OWU Freshmen spend their first Sunday on campus participating in an activity of their choice— ultimate frisbee, ball room dancing, hiking, or working on a Habitat for Humanity site —this year Freshmen helped clear the site for house #30 at 31 Curtis St., and worked on house #27 in Ashley

The Otterbein Collegiate Chapter is another strong supporter of DCHFH. Under the leadership of Monty Bradley, students visit DCHFH construction sites three or four times per semester. The above students worked in Ashley.
